Wells eyes another year in the 'ER'
Exec producer, NBC think about new season

Despite buzz that this could be the final season for "ER," exec producer John Wells isn't ready to call it quits just yet.
At Saturday's swank Hollywood bash marking the NBC medical drama's 300th episode, Wells told Daily Variety that he's expecting to begin talks with NBC about another season of the show sometime this month.
Industry thinking has been that NBC might be ready to finally check out of "ER" come May simply because the show's ratings have declined enough that they don't justify its large per-episode pricetag. It's believed the show still commands north of $5 million per hour, about double what a first-year drama costs.
Still, if producer Warner Bros. TV could find a way to reduce the cost of "ER" a bit, NBC might have an incentive to keep "ER" open. Skein still averages a 4 rating in the adults 18-49 demo, above NBC's overall demo average this season of a 3.4 rating.
Does Wells think a deal can get done?
"I hope so," he said, adding he and the show's producers still have some stories to tell.

Wyle to leave full-time ER cast
Actor Noah Wyle is to leave his full-time role as Dr John Carter in medical TV drama ER, the programme's network NBC has announced.
The 33-year-old will leave Chicago's fictional County General Hospital at the end of the current series, which finishes in the US on 19 May.
Wyle is due to return for four episodes in each of the next two series.
The only star left in the show from its 1994 debut, he has said he has "an urge to scratch a different kind of itch".
Wyle joined the original cast as an impressionable young medic along with George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Eriq La Salle and Julianna Margulies.
As other actors left the show, Dr Carter became a major character in the series.
ER's executive producer John Wells said he was "very sad" at Wyle's decision.
"Noah and I have a lot of history together. He's a wonderful actor and a wonderful man, and it's been great to watch him grow up and get married and have a family," he said.
Wyle hinted last year he was planning to quit the series because his character was coming to the end of its run.
After five Emmy nominations for his role, he said he wanted to do something different in his acting career and concentrate on family life.
"I've got family and friends that said goodbye to me 12 years ago and are wondering when I'm coming back," he said.

After 11 Years, Wyle Makes Final 'ER' Rounds
Noah Wyle has officially not been an "ER" regular for about a month, but the realization that his time on the show is just about done hasn't completely hit yet.
"It's like pangs," says Wyle, whose last episode as star of the NBC series airs Thursday (May 19). "You go through the day and don't feel anything, and you're actually kind of happy about the fact you don't feel anything. Then you'll hear a promo on the TV in the other room, and your heart just takes a jump. ... It's very strange how it's sort of manifesting itself. ...
"But it hasn't been -- you know, I haven't fainted, I haven't burst into tears. I'm waiting for something monumental, and it's been very subtle."
That Wyle would show some withdrawal symptoms -- he figures he'll feel them again when it would be time to go back to work in late summer -- is understandable. The 33-year-old is, after all, leaving a show he's been part of since day one in 1994 and that's taken up a third of his life.
His character, Dr. John Carter, has gone from a scared intern who shied from the simplest of procedures to a confident doctor who has found his place. His final episode will find him returning to Africa to continue working with a Doctors Without Borders-like group and rekindling his relationship with true love Kem (Thandie Newton).
"He's a guy who's really been looking to feel loved and feel a sense of belonging and entitlement to his own life," Wyle says of Carter. "I think in a lot of ways, with the Africa storyline we did last year, we really started to clue into that side of the character's wish fulfillment. I think he's getting exactly what he wants in the form of a new lease on life."
For Wyle himself, getting out of the intense work schedule of filming an hour-long series will allow him to spend more time with his family -- he and his wife are expecting their second child in the fall -- and allow him to choose parts without having to fit them into his summer hiatus. First up is a sequel to last year's "The Librarian," which drew strong ratings for TNT.
Wyle, the last member of the original "ER" cast to depart, says he got "absolutely everything I was looking for in the show." But if he looks at it from the perspective of his younger self, his hopes for what he'd get out of the series didn't quite meet with reality.
"I guess I was initially hoping the show would go for long enough that I'd make some money and then get cancelled and free me up to go pursue the feature career I thought I was destined to embark upon," he says with a chuckle. "The irony that 11 years later the show is leaving me off is pretty thick. ...
"[But] I found some of the richest friendships I could ever want to have, and some of the most challenging work and most well-received work an actor could ever hope to have."
He's particularly proud of the way Carter's relationship with Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle) played out in the show's early years; the character's battle with drug addiction; and the story on which he's leaving the series, with Carter going to Africa. Viewers will get to see a glimpse of Carter's future life in coming seasons; he's contracted to make eight guest appearances in the next two years.
"I just had a ball with that," Wyle says of the Africa thread. "It aligned itself perfectly with my own personal politics and sense of philanthropy; I work a lot with organizations similar to the one we're depicting. So that has been extremely rewarding."
In a recent episode of the show, another character remarks to Carter that it doesn't seem like he wants to be at County General anymore. Wyle says people shouldn't read anything about his leaving the show into that line.
"It's not a fair line to apply to me personally," he says. "One thing I can honestly say is I stayed exactly as long as I wanted to. I wouldn't have left a second sooner."
