CapeCodTimes.com

thestar.comでは別の心配をしている。

CSI: Cast Shake-up Imminent
The announcement this past week that William Petersen will depart "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" could leave the top-rated forensics drama minus three major characters in the coming season.

Jorja Fox, who plays Sara Sidle, left last season, although she will return for multiple episodes in the fall, in a story line paving the way for the departure of Petersen's character, Gil Grissom. And Gary Dourdan's appearance in the Oct. 9 season premiere will likely be a death scene, since his contract was not renewed and his character, Warrick Brown, was shot at close range in the neck and chest in the final moments of last season's finale.

The show plans to add two new characters, one male and one female, in the coming season, and although Petersen will no longer be a regular after the 10th episode, he may make an occasional guest appearance. Whether fans embrace this new team of investigators will be the show's latest unsolved mystery.

"CSI" is not the first prime-time show to lose major characters, but it's one of few to lose so many at once. Such departures have met with varying degrees of success on other shows.

"M*A*S*H" is the prime example of a show that lost several key characters (McLean Stevenson as Henry Blake, Wayne Rogers as "Trapper John" McIntyre, Larry Linville as Frank Burns and Gary Burghoff as "Radar" O'Reilly) through the years and yet continued to thrive. In some instances the replacements became more popular than the original cast members.

And long-running shows such as "Law & Order" and "ER" have become a revolving door for doctors and detectives and still manage to survive.

Of course, those shows all feature large ensembles, making it easier to absorb the losses. "Criminal Minds" has done just fine since the abrupt departure last season of Mandy Patinkin, replacing him with the steady Joe Mantegna, and "Grey's Anatomy," perhaps less successfully, still has plenty of soapy plotlines to pursue since Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) was fired and Kate Walsh (Addison Montgomery) left to enter "Private Practice."

On shows in which the characters are always in danger ("Lost," "Heroes" and "24," among them) viewers brace for sudden departures, but there's a limit to what they'll endure. We can deal with Boone's death on "Lost," for example ― Charlie was tougher to swallow ― but don't even think of touching Hurley.

Casting is key. A replacement character doesn't have to hew closely to the original (Charlie Sheen was really just a slightly snarkier version of the self-deprecating, commitment-phobic Michael J. Fox on "Spin City"); the right person can break off in a new direction.

Remember the uproar when Chevy Chase left "Saturday Night Live" after the first season? Bill Murray may have helped you forget. And Jimmy Smits brought an entirely different personality to "NYPD Blue" when he stepped in to take David Caruso's place in Season 2, as did Kirstie Alley to "Cheers" when she replaced Shelley Long.

Chemistry becomes more important when smaller ensembles are involved. Cheryl Ladd made for a seamless transition when she replaced Farrah Fawcett after the first season of "Charlie's Angels," but Shelley Hack and Tanya Roberts never clicked as later substitutes for Kate Jackson; each lasted only a year.

Sometimes you can gauge how successful a cast change was by which reruns you prefer to watch. "Designing Women" was never the same after Delta Burke, who played the sassy, self-absorbed Suzanne Sugarbaker, left, and the underrated comic sensibilities of Suzanne Somers became more apparent after she was evicted from "Three's Company."

Good writing can turn the attention to other characters, allowing, for example, Sue Ann Nivens (played by Betty White) to grow into a major part of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" after Rhoda and Phyllis (Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman) were given spinoff series. Less interesting was the shift to Joanie and Chachi after Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) departed "Happy Days."

Sometimes the loss of a character changes the entire focus of a show, and the series falters. When John Amos and, later, Esther Rolle left "Good Times" because they didn't like the direction the program was headed in, a show that was supposed to be about a struggling but closely knit black family became a show about children living on their own.

And when John Ritter died at the start of the second season, "8 Simple Rules" lost its core, the overprotective dad, and the father figures who replaced him, James Garner as the grandfather and David Spade as a cousin, could not carry the show beyond a third year.

The removal of four major characters after the 2006-07 season hasn't hurt "Boston Legal," however; it continues to rack up Emmy nominations, deserved or not. That's because the heart of the show was and still is the relationship between Alan (James Spader) and Denny (William Shatner).

One of the most notable shifts in tone occurred when Susan St. James left "McMillan and Wife" in a contract dispute. Her character, Sally, was killed off and the show became "McMillan." Even Rock Hudson couldn't hold on to viewers for more than a year beyond that.

Perhaps more prime-time shows should take a page from daytime soap operas, and just replace actors as they leave without eliminating their characters. The debate continues to this day as to whether Dick York or Dick Sargent made the better Darrin on "Bewitched."

Awaiting a fall resurrection
New life for premiering and returning shows found at TCA tour

And though we are sworn to secrecy, CBS gave critics an early cut of CSI's ninth season opener and viewers may not have seen the last of Warrick Brown, despite the gloomy post-arrest career potential of the disgraced actor who plays him, Gary Dourdan.

And ironically, as star William Peterson prepares to take his leave, his CSI squeeze, Sarah Sidle (Jorja Fox), has signed to make a return guest appearance.
