NBC ANNOUNCES GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER AND EMMY NOMINEE ANTHONY EDWARDS TO REPRISE HIS ROLE AS DR. MARK GREENE FOR ONE EPISODE OF 'ER' FOR ITS 15TH AND FINAL SEASON
BURBANK, Calif. – September 4, 2008 - NBC announced that Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Anthony Edwards will reprise his role as Dr. Mark Greene for one episode of NBC's long running show "ER" (Thursdays, 10-11 p.m. ET/PT). Edwards will return in the episode entitled "Heal Thyself," which was written and directed by executive producer David Zabel, and will air on November 13, 2008.

The installment will feature Dr. Greene in a series of newly shot scenes that will feature other characters from the show's past while also giving insight into Dr. Banfield's (Angela Bassett) past and her experiences within the walls of County General.

"We had hoped to bring back some of "ER's" stars for the final season and think that our loyal fans will enjoy seeing some of the shows most beloved and memorable characters," said executive producer John Wells.

Edwards first appeared in the "ER" pilot and after nearly eight memorable seasons, completed his run in a highly rated episode at the end of the 2001-02 television season.

Edwards has received four Emmy® nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also won three Screen Actor's Guild Awards (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series in 1996, Best Ensemble Cast in 1998 and 1999), the Golden Globe Award in 1998 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Drama and a People's Choice Award in 1995 for Favorite Male Performer in a New Television Series.

Edwards can next be seen in the feature film "Motherhood" with Uma Thurman. He was most recently in the film "Zodiac," directed by David Fincher. Other recent credits include "Thunderbirds" for Universal, "Northfork" written by the Polish brothers and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," which he executive produced in association with his production company Aviator Films. The company also produced the NBC television movie, "Borderline," that starred "ER" alumna Sherry Stringfield.

Edwards has appeared in more than 20 features, including his memorable turn as "Goose" in the blockbuster feature "Top Gun." His other feature credits include; "Playing by Heart," "The Client," "Miracle Mile," "Mr. North," "Hawks," "The Sure Thing," "Gotcha," "Revenge of the Nerds," "Heart Like a Wheel," and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

Edwards made his film directorial debut with "Charley's Ghost Story," a modern-day Mark Twain adaptation starring Cheech Marin and Linda Fiorentino.

NBC renewed "ER" for a 15th and final season in April. Combining the extraordinary talents of multiple award-winning producer John Wells ("The West Wing" "Third Watch"), best-selling author Michael Crichton ("Jurassic Park") and the creative team at Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, the venerated series "ER" explores the inner workings of an urban teaching hospital and the critical issues faced by the dedicated physicians and staff of its overburdened emergency room. Currently beginning its 15th season, the highly acclaimed drama series now holds the distinction of being recognized as the most Emmy®-nominated series in the history of television with 122 nominations. Crichton, Wells and Zabel serve as executive producers, along with Christopher Chulack, Joe Sachs and Janine Sherman Barrois.

A winner of the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, the series has also earned 22 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series in 1996, among many accolades. In addition, the cast has been honored with four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series.

The long-running series stars Maura Tierney ("Diggers," "Welcome to Mooseport,"), Mekhi Phifer ("Dawn of the Dead," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "8 Mile," "Slow Burn"), Parminder Nagra ("Ella Enchanted," "Bend It Like Beckham"), Linda Cardellini ("Brokeback Mountain, "Scooby-Doo" films, "Grandma's Boy," "Freaks and Geeks"), Scott Grimes ("Band of Brothers," "American Dad," "Party of Five," "Mystery, Alaska"), John Stamos ("A Raisin in the Sun," "Jake in Progress"), David Lyons ("Blue Heelers") and Angela Bassett ("Akeelah and the Bee," "What's Love Got To Do With It").

On staff at County General Hospital are Abby Lockhart (Tierney), a recovering alcoholic trying her best to juggle a demanding residency and motherhood while everything around her seems to be falling apart; Dr. Greg Pratt (Phifer), an attending fighting for the chief spot on the floor as well as for a firm grasp on his love life; Neela Rasgotra (Nagra), a skilled surgical resident committed to growing in her craft as well as in her place on the surgical team; Sam Taggart (Cardellini), a spirited ER nurse who is finally getting some time to explore life and love both in and outside the hospital; Dr. Archie Morris (Grimes), the quirky-yet-talented attending dedicated to his work but constantly distracted by his own world; Tony Gates (Stamos), a paramedic-turned-doctor who has overcome numerous obstacles to take on the rigorous challenges of life in the ER, Dr. Simon Brenner (Lyons) the newest attending physician with a penchant for stirring things up and Dr. Cate Banfield (Bassett) as a tough-as-nails attending physician whose arrival shakes up the ER.

"ER" is a production of Constant c Productions and Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Anthony Edwards to return to 'ER' despite his character being dead
Well, PopWatchers, I gotta say I didn't see this one coming: Despite my hopes that the upcoming final season of ER would bring a slew of guest appearances from some of the approximately 2,560 actors that have graced the halls of County General over the past 14 years, Anthony Edwards' Dr. Mark Greene never quite entered my consciousness. Not that I didn't love the guy -- his bespectacled bald head and befuddled inability to get it together with Sherry Stringfield's character were my favorite non-Clooney-oriented parts of the show's early years. But, um, HE'S DEAD. (You remember: Brain tumor. Hawaii. Profanity on prime-time TV. Etc.) (What I didn't remember: How ahead of the curve they were on that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole ukelele version of "Over the Rainbow." Nice.)

And yet, there it was, in our inboxes this afternoon: NBC ANNOUNCES GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER AND EMMY NOMINEE ANTHONY EDWARDS TO REPRISE HIS ROLE AS DR. MARK GREENE FOR ONE EPISODE OF 'ER' FOR ITS 15TH AND FINAL SEASON. (Caps NBC's, not mine.)

Wow! Bombshell! And one that, I figured, would take some doing to work. But it turns out it's happening the only way it possibly could -- on November 13th, in an episode called "Heal Thyself," we'll get a new flashback courtesy of the other big returning character, Mr. Noah "Dr. Carter" Wyle, whose storyline, it turns out, will constitute the bookends of this show's epic run. A call over to the network confirms that the flashback will take place in a time right before Mark's second bout with the brain tumor, and give some insight into the past of Dr. Cate Banfield, aka "that lady Angela Bassett's playing."

What do we think, ER fans? Yea or nay on the bringing people back from the dead here? Does this mean we can expect a Dr. Romano return, as well? Who else are you hoping to see back in ER's halls one final time? And honestly, if Clooney doesn't show, how bummed will you be?

Anthony Edwards Scrubs Back in at ER
Look who ER dug up to celebrate its final season: Dr. Mark Greene, who died of a brain tumor in Hawaii back in 2002. Original cast member Anthony Edwards signed a deal Wednesday night to reprise his popular character for the Nov. 13 episode of the long-running NBC drama.

Dearly departed Mark will not be spooking Linda Cardellini (of Scooby Doo fame), but rather will be appearing in multiple flashback scenes to give insight into the past of Angela Bassett's character.

In the episode, Bassett's Cate Banfield enters County General Hospital's emergency room ― but not in a doctor capacity. At her bedside is Edwards, who collected numerous awards for playing one of TV's all-time most compassionate docs.

Entitled "Heal Thyself," the episode is to shoot next week and was written by ER executive producer David Zabel, who will also direct. For its 15th and final season, the series hopes to bring back other familiar vets for one last hurrah, including Noah Wyle, who will return for four of the final episodes. ― William Keck

Anthony Edwards books return trip to 'ER'
Mark Greene is still dead, but Anthony Edwards will resurrect the character one last time during the final season of ER.

NBC announced Thursday (Sept. 4) that Edwards, last seen on ER in the spring of 2002, will reprise his role as Dr. Mark Greene for one episode in the show's forthcoming 15th season. His appearance is scheduled to air Nov. 13.

"We had hoped to bring back some of ER's stars for the final season and think that our loyal fans will enjoy seeing some of the show's most beloved and memorable characters," executive producer John Wells says.

Edwards is the second former regular to agree to a return appearance in the show's final lap. Noah Wyle will be in several episodes.

As for the circumstances of his return, Greene won't be coming back to life. Instead, he'll appear in flashbacks that will help fill in the back story of Dr. Cate Banfield (new cast member Angela Bassett) and her history at County General. NBC also hints at other former cast members appearing in the flashback scenes, though the press release doesn't name any names.

Edwards starred on ER for its first eight seasons, leaving in 2002 with an episode in which Mark died of a brain tumor. The role earned him four Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win. He co-starred in Zodiac last year and will appear opposite Uma Thurman and Minnie Driver in the comedy Motherhood, which is due in theaters next year.

Anthony Edwards Checks Back Into ERNBC is bringing out the big guns for its 15th and final season of ER. The big, nostalgia-laden, tear-inducing guns.

E! News has confirmed that original ER castmember Anthony Edwards, who played Dr. Mark Greene on the medical hit for eight years before heading to that big emergency room in the sky back in 2002, has signed on to reprise his role for a one-episode guest stint during―when else?―November sweeps.

Show purists can rest easy that producers are only interested in resuscitating ratings, not Edwards' character, and that Dr. Greene will be appearing in flashback form.

While the character passed away from a brain tumor during a memorably weepy episode nearly six years ago, Edwards will appear in a flashback scene this time around with new series regular Angela Bassett, County General's newest attending doctor.

Adding to the guest-star spectacular, Bassett's real-life hubby, Courtney B. Vance, will also play her reel-life hubby on the show.

The episode goes into production next week and airs Nov. 13.
